The birthplace of Lord Krishna\nattracts thousands of tourists and pilgrims during Holi. According to\nscriptures, the tradition of playing Holi originated from the Raas Leela of\nRadha and Krishna. The celebrations here begin a week before Holi with a\ncolorful musical procession from the temples to River Yamuna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Radha-Krishna story will take\nyou to the town of Barsana in Uttar Pradesh, where the unique tradition of lath\nmaar Holi is practiced. Re-enacting how Krishna would tease Radha and her\nfriends, the two-day festival has men indulging in the playful mocking, while\nthe women chase them away with large sticks. Hence, the name. The men protect\nthemselves with shields while being chased around town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shantiniketan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Started by Rabindranath Tagore in\nthe Visva-Bharati University at Shantiniketan, Holi celebrations here are\nmarked by cultural programs and folk dances. The students and other members of\nthe institution dress up in yellow and put up a host of performances after\nwhich everyone indulges in color play. Also known as Basanta Utsav, the Holi\ncelebrations here have become an integral part of Bengali culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goa<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The festival known as Shigmotsav\nlocally can last for a fortnight. The festivities begin with prayers to various\nGods and Goddesses with parades, performances and cultural dramas that remain\nthe highlight in the last five days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
