Tata Capital > Blog > Why should we take a test-drive for used car?
When you decide to buy used cars, there are some important checks you must make before the deal is sealed. The most important of those is the test drive! Irrespective of whether the car is certified or not, it is strongly recommended you take it out for a spin before you choose to drive it home.
Refrain from buying unbelievably low-priced used car without doing the preliminary checks. The low price usually means low quality. If you are considering a used car loan, opting for a slightly costlier car than your pre-decided budget will be a good idea.
Turn on the ignition and put the car in neutral gear. Listen to how the engine sounds. If you notice a noise creeping in, it means that the cabin is not insulated well or there is an issue with the engine placement. Now, gradually press the accelerator. It should rev cleanly without any rattling. Even at higher RPMs, there should be no sudden vibrations. If it exists, the problem could be with the engine rubber mounting or drive assembly. Buying such a used car in cash or via second hand car loan is not going to be wise.

Drive the car with the AC running moderately for a couple of minutes and then increase the speed of the AC fan to the maximum. Notice the difference in the car’s performance in this period. If you feel the engine is mildly impacted due to the switch, the AC is good to go as many older cars show such signs. This is normal. If the dip in performance is massive, the car could bother you in hot temperatures, and it’s better to stay away from such a used vehicle.
Test the brakes on an open stretch of the road with no traffic. Drive at a regular speed of 50 kmph and gradually apply the brakes. If you notice any vibration from the pedal or the vehicle drifts towards the side, the brake assembly could be faulty.
Your test drive should also focus on checking steering feedback. To test the steering, head to a vacant area and stop the car. Now turn the steering towards one end and gradually try to turn the vehicle. Keep your ears open for any noise from the suspension or resistance from the steering. If you notice any, the steering assembly or suspension set up could be a cause for worry.
Test-drive the used vehicle with full cabin occupancy. This will help you understand how well the engine and suspensions respond when driven at full capacity. If the rear fender touches the tires, the suspensions could be defective.
These are some handy tips that should explain why a test drive of a used vehicle up for sale is necessary.
If you have finalized on a car and are looking for a financing partner that offers the best used car loan interest rates, Tata Capital is here to assist you. With Tata Capital, you can expect quick sanctioning of loans offered with several benefits.
