Tata Capital > Blog > What is a Hybrid Car? How Exactly Does it Work?
Of the few eco-mobility options available in the market, hybrid cars undoubtedly top the list. Popular for providing better fuel economy and having lower running costs, they are quickly becoming the vehicles of choice for many car buyers.
While the concept of hybrid technology isn’t new, it is only becoming mainstream now. Yet, few know how this technology really works or how it is different from gasoline-powered vehicles. Are you also wondering – what is a hybrid car, and how does it work? Well, let’s find out.
Contrary to a standard gasoline-powered car, a hybrid car is powered by traditional petrol or diesel engine combined with an electric motor that runs on a hybrid battery. These cars can switch between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor or draw power from both sources depending upon the driving scenario.
To better understand hybrid cars, let us look at five different driving scenarios and how these cars would work in each.
In this scenario, it is the electric motor that gets the car moving initially. Then, it is the hybrid battery that supplies the power to keep the vehicle moving forward.

Normal cruising could also include driving at higher speeds. In such a scenario, both the electric motor and the petrol/diesel engine can run independently or work in tandem to propel the vehicle to higher speeds.
When the hybrid vehicle is pushed to heavy or hard acceleration levels, it is exclusively the internal combustion engine, petrol, or diesel, that takes it to higher speeds.
When you apply the brakes or ease the pressure applied to the accelerator, the power supply to the vehicle’s wheels is cut off, thereby bringing them to rest.
Equipped with an automatic start and stop feature, both the internal combustion engine as well as the electric motor turn off when the vehicle comes to a state of complete halt. However, systems such as interior lights, radio, air-conditioning, etc., continue to work from the power supplied by the battery.
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons to invest in a hybrid car is the improved fuel economy you enjoy without compromising on the car’s performance. In comparison to a gasoline-powered car, a hybrid car’s engine is small and lightweight, leading to greater fuel efficiency. As a result, the twin-powered engine of a hybrid vehicle also emits relatively less CO2 emissions.
However, hybrid cars can incline towards the pricier side. But if you’re interested in buying one, you can also bag a good deal in the second-hand market using a used car loan from Tata Capital!
