Tata Capital > Blog > Decoding the Top Indian Wedding Customs and Rituals for You
An Indian wedding is unlike any other celebration. From locations to wardrobes to the food being served, every last detail is looked into. And these celebrations usually last a week.
A typical Indian wedding is a festival in itself, where two families unite and celebrations ensue. However, it is also a maze of rituals that the newlyweds must navigate to start their happily ever after. And since it can be a challenge manoeuvring around them, we are decoding them for you.
Here’s all you need to know about top Indian wedding rituals and why they are essential.
This is among the first rituals in an Indian wedding. It all begins with choosing a suitable date for the bride and groom to get married and is considered one of the most significant wedding customs.
Generally, astrologists calculate the stars and planets’ positions during the “muhurta”, an auspicious period, and how the alignment will affect the couple’s union. Upon calculating everything, the perfect date is chosen.
Choosing the correct date for holy matrimony is considered sacred and is a custom that holds a lot of meaning for Indians.
“Mehndi” is yet another holy ceremony in Indian weddings. During this, Mehndi, or “henna”, is applied on the bride’s feet and hands in numerous intricate and beautiful designs.
The Mehndi ceremony takes several hours to complete, and hence, occurs at least a day before the wedding. During this Indian marriage tradition, all family members gather to celebrate the incoming big day. It is a time to celebrate and dote on the bride.
Most people believe that the Mehndi’s colour holds enormous significance, as the darker it is, the more blessings the bride will receive. This Hindu marriage ritual is an age-old practice that has been followed for generations.
Be it modern or traditional Indian weddings, they’re all incomplete without the ancient verses and Sanskrit Shlokas’ chanted by the Pandit (priest). This is considered extremely important, as it makes the occasion sacred. These are an essential part of the Hindu marriage ritual and are chanted to bestow sanctity and blessings on the couple’s married life together.
Every Indian wedding has a “Mandap”, a sacred place where the groom and the bride undertake their wedding vows. Mandaps’ origin goes back to the Vedic age, when this ritual was performed indoors for hygienic reasons. However, modern-day Mandaps are also positioned outdoors. It usually consists of four pillars, each of them representing one of the four parents and auspiciousness for the wedded pair.
The wedding altar is situated at the Mandap’s centre, where a fire is lit, also called “Agni”, which burns throughout the wedding ceremony. According to Indian customs, this fire is kept as the witness, and offerings are provided to the flames.
The couple to be married sit in the mandap, as the priest reads sacred texts and seeks the almighty’s blessing for the holy bond. The couple then takes seven rounds of the fire seeking good wishes and making lifelong promises to one another and to God. This is one of the core rituals in Indian weddings.
While most customs have remained the same, choosing a particular location for the wedding has become an emerging trend. Especially for a cultural destination wedding, the bride and the groom spend a considerable amount of time choosing the perfect place for the families to meet and celebrate the union.
Jaipur, Udaipur, Goa, Kerala, Rishikesh, Agra, etc., are some of the most popular Indian destinations for weddings. However, such marriage ceremonies are usually more expensive, and if you’re planning for the same, you can opt for a travel loan.
Weddings are a time to celebrate new unions with your family and friends. Indian marriage traditions usually lay emphasis on the importance of having our near and dear ones with us on such an auspicious milestone. But these can often be heavy on the pocket.
