Tata Capital > Blog > How to Maintain a Good Battery Life of your Bike
Don’t fancy the idea of kick-starting your motorcycle until your leg hurts? Well, then you must pay special attention to your bike’s battery. It’s essentially the second heart of your motorcycle (the first being your engine!) but is typically the most neglected one.
A weak battery will not only butcher your bike’s performance but can also shut it down completely. Worse, it can leave you stranded out in the middle of nowhere. That’s why it is better to invest in practices that will add to your bike battery’s lifetime.
Don’t know where to start? Well, here are some tips to help you out.
Sometimes, the most effective solution is often the simplest. In the case of a bike battery, keeping your bike running can help extend its lifetime. Bike batteries are rechargeable; every time you turn on the ignition, the battery starts charging itself. Unfortunately, the charge also tends to leak out of the battery.
With long periods of bike unuse, its battery drains out faster, leaving kick-starting the only option available. With that said, since the introduction of BS-IV regulations, motorcycles no longer have a kick pedal. This simply means you’d have to charge the battery manually at a service station in case it runs out.
Frequent charging can drastically reduce a battery’s lifetime. So, it’s better to keep working your battery.
Loose connection or wiring is almost always an invitation for sparking. And if you want long battery life, you don’t want your battery to spark. When sparking occurs, a large amount of current is drawn from your battery in a short time interval. If it occurs frequently, your battery may run out of its fuel.
A wrench tends to do the fastening job in most cases. But if the connections are loose due to rusting, make sure to ask your mechanic to grease the terminals.

If you want the best battery life for bikes, you’ll want to make sure that your battery has enough fluids to run on. The best way is to manually check your battery’s water level every couple of weeks. If you find your battery running on fumes, you can add water to it. However, make sure you only use distilled deionized water. Using regular tap water can cause irreversible damage to the battery.
Also, if you aren’t sure about how much water your battery needs, you can refer to the minimum and maximum markers on the side of your battery.
It’s also essential to park your bike where it’s safe from any natural influence. Winds, rain, cold, and even heat can cause damage to your bike battery. Lastly, installing rodent traps in your garage will keep them from chewing away all the wiring.
