Tata Women’s IPL 2023 Auction Highlights

The Tata Women’s Premier League is just about to start, and fans cannot contain their excitement. But, the celebrations have already started with the Women’s IPL auction.

The long-awaited and eagerly anticipated tournament saw a historic auction with bids all over. Ever since the Women’s IPL was confirmed on October 22, 2022, people in the cricketing fraternity waited to know who the teams were and who the players were.

Now that we have all the details surrounding the hype, let’s take a look at it.

Tata WPL auction highlights

The Tata WPL auction saw a huge round of money spent on players. Overall, a total of Rs. 59.5 Crore was spent on a total of 87 players.

The team with the most expensive payout, Royal Challengers Bangalore spent Rs. 3.4 crore for Smriti Mandhana. The next expensive payouts saw Gujarat Giants spending Rs 3.2 crore for Australian all-rounder, Ashleigh Gardner after a period of intense drama. Equally, Mumbai Indians spent Rs 3.2 crore for England’s Natalie Sciver.

The new team, UP Warriorz, saw an equally forceful player entering its squad. Deepti Sharma, with all her finesse in the recent World Cup against Pakistan, was bought for 2.6 crores. Delhi Capitals hit the jackpot by getting all-rounder Jemimah Rodrigues for Rs 2.2 crore and Shafali Verma for Rs 2 crore.

Mumbai Indians, too, hit the jackpot through the captain of the Indian women’s team, Harmanpreet Kaur, who was bought for Rs. 1.8 crore. Royal Challengers Bangalore further purchased players Richa Ghosh, Ellyse Perry, and Reunka Singh for Rs 1.9 crore, Rs 1.7 crore, and Rs 1.5 crore each. 

Further highlights include UP Warriorz buying Devika Vaidya for Rs. 1.4 crore, Mumbai Indians buying Amelia Kerr for Rs. 1 crore.

Tata WPL 2023 Tournament Highlights

Tata WPL 2023 is set to be one of the highlights of the sporting world this year. Since it’s a historic moment for women’s sports, fans are eagerly awaiting for the Tata Women’s Premier League 2023 to start.

This year’s Tata Women Premier League has a total of five teams playing in total. These teams include:

1) Gujarat Giants

2) Royal Challengers Bangalore (Women)

3) Delhi Capitals (Women)

4) Mumbai Indians (Women)

5) UP Warriorz 

These five teams will play against each other twice, comprising a total of 20 league matches. The total match count for this tournament is 23, with the last remaining matches being the eliminator match, the semi-finals, and the finals. All the matches of the Women’s IPL will be held in two stadiums: The DY Patil stadium and the Brabourne Stadium.

Tata WPL Tournament Details

Like its predecessor, the IPL, the Tata WPL 2023 follows a similar format. The team with the most points during the tournament will reach the finals. Consequently, the eliminator match will be played between the teams in the second and the third position, who’ll end up becoming the runner-up of the Women’s IPL 2023.

Similar to the major highlights of the Tata Women’s Premier League auction, another highlight is the player allotment. The Board has specified a certain number of rules for players and nations that the teams can include. They are:

1) Each team can have a maximum of 18 players in their entire squad 

2) For overseas players, a maximum of 5 is allowed on every team 

3) These 5 overseas players must comprise 4 players from the Member Nations and one from an Associate Member Nation

With just a few days left for the Tata WPL to start, the tournament will go down in history as one of the finest.
