Tata Capital > Blog > Places To Visit In Varanasi
Varanasi, situated in Uttar Pradesh, is one of India’s oldest cities, with a rich history of over 2,800 years. It holds profound spiritual significance, with the belief that dying here liberates the soul from the cycle of rebirth and connects it with the divine.
The city’s main attractions are its Ghats, which serve as vibrant focal points. However, Varanasi’s narrow alleys are also worth exploring. They are like labyrinths, where you might enter from one end and exit from another. But alleys and ghats are not it. There are many places to see in Banaras.
The famous place to visit in Kashi is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It’s dedicated to Lord Shiva and attracts countless pilgrims throughout the year. The temple stands as a major landmark in Varanasi and is known for its beautiful architecture and spiritual significance. Walking through its corridors, you can feel the deep-rooted devotion that defines this ancient city. The temple complex can get crowded, so it’s best to arrive early.
Timings: 3 am – 11 pm
When to visit: Mornings are less crowded, making it the perfect time to visit.
Another famous Banaras tourist place is the Dashashwamedh Ghat. It’s famous for its grand Ganga Aarti, a daily evening ritual that draws locals and tourists alike. Priests perform the aarti with lit lamps, chanting, and rhythmic drum beats. Witnessing this ceremony from the ghat itself or from a boat on the river is an experience that captures the very soul of Varanasi. The vibrant energy and devotion during the aarti are truly moving.
Timings: In the morning, it’s 5:30 am – 12 pm, and in the evening it’s 4 pm – 9 pm.
When to visit: The best time to visit this Banaras tourist point is in the evening when you can also enjoy a boat ride and marvel at the breathtaking view of the ghats and the aarti.
A little further down from the main ghats, Assi Ghat is a favourite spot for both locals and tourists who come to soak in the peaceful morning atmosphere. Known for its morning music and yoga sessions, it’s the perfect place to experience the quieter side of Varanasi. Assi Ghat has a relaxed vibe, with visitors taking in the views of the sunrise while sipping chai or participating in the “Subah-e-Banaras” program.
Timings: Open 24*7
When to visit: Early morning. Join a yoga or music session at sunrise.
Next on our list of places to visit in Banaras is Sarnath. A short drive from Varanasi, it’s a key Buddhist pilgrimage site where Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon. The area is dotted with ancient stupas and temples, and the Sarnath Archaeological Museum holds fascinating artefacts, including the original Ashoka Pillar lion capital. This peaceful spot is perfect for a day trip and offers a glimpse into India’s rich Buddhist heritage.
Timmings: 8 am to 6 pm
Entry fee: Rs 20 for Indians and Rs 100 for Non-Indians.
If you visit Varanasi and don’t try the tempting chatpata street food, your trip is incomplete. The best place to experience authentic chaat in Varanasi is Kashi Chaat Bhandar. Located near Godowlia Chowk, this eatery is famous for its various chaats, including the signature Tamatar Chaat and Palak Patta Chaat. This shop is one of the famous Varanasi tourist places.
Timings: 3 pm to 9 pm
An important place to go to in Varanasi is Manaikarnika Ghat. Known as one of the city’s main cremation ghats, it reflects the city’s unique perspective on life and death. The belief here is that cremation in Varanasi leads to moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). While this is an intense place to visit, it offers a profound insight into the spiritual beliefs that shape Varanasi.
Across the Ganges, you’ll find Ramnagar Fort, built in the 17th century. This old fort is the former residence of the Maharaja of Varanasi and now houses a quirky museum featuring everything from vintage cars to antique weapons. Though parts of the fort are in disrepair, the structure’s rustic charm and the views across the river make it a good place for an afternoon outing.
Timings: 10 am to 5 pm
Entry Fee: Entry to the fort is free, but to the museum, it’s Rs 20 for Indians and Rs 150 for foreigners.
Tulsi Manas Temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, is an elegant structure with white marble walls inscribed with verses from the Ramcharitmanas, written by the poet Tulsidas. The temple exudes peace and simplicity, a nice change from the bustling ghats. The inscriptions on the walls add a unique touch, creating a reflective atmosphere for visitors.
When to visit: Early mornings are best for a peaceful visit.
Hidden on Lalita Ghat, the Nepali Temple was built by the King of Nepal and reflects traditional Nepali architecture. The temple is crafted from wood and decorated with intricate carvings, giving it a rustic and unique charm. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, then this temple is the perfect place to see in Varanasi.
Timings: 5:30 am – 12 pm and 3:30 pm – 9 pm.
When to visit: Afternoons are usually quieter.
Ever admired Rekha’s iconic sarees? Many are crafted from Varanasi’s famous Banarasi silk. Known for its rich collection of Banarasi sarees, the city’s markets offer something special, and Rajan Silk Market stands out for its contemporary and designer options at wholesale prices. While Banarasi sarees can be costly elsewhere, here, you’ll find quality pieces here at fair prices. They also offer Banarasi dupattas, which are currently very popular.
Varanasi is a beautiful city in Uttar Pradesh. With so much culture and history steeped in this place, every alley you turn into tells a story. If you visit Varanasi and are on a week-long trip, you can travel to Allahabad, which is about 2.5 hours away. Allahabad, like Varanasi, is a lovely city famous for the Ganga, Anand Bhawan, its old shopping areas, and street food.
