Tata Capital > Blog > Places to Visit in Kodaikanal
One of the most picturesque hill stations in Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal justifiably earned its nickname of “The Princess of Hill Stations.” There’s a sense of perfect serenity, with misty hills, crystal-clear lakes, gorgeous waterfalls, and rich forests to get one out of life’s hullaballoo. This 2,133 metre-tall paradise is for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts in Palani Hills.
Here is a detailed guide to must-visit Kodaikanal sightseeing places:
Kodai Lake is at the heart of Kodaikanal. It is a star-shaped artificial wonder surrounded by a picturesque landscape. The serene lake, created in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, makes it one of the attractions in Kodaikanal. Visitors can enjoy boating or cycling around the 5 km perimeter or relax at the shores. Paddles and rowboats are also available, offering a unique perspective of the misty surroundings. There are rides by the lake along the banks as well. The sun sets behind the hills, making the evening in its presence just magical.
A walk along Coaker’s Walk is like strolling through the clouds. A narrow, winding pathway along the mountain edge provides beautiful views of the valleys, plains, and distant hills. Constructed in 1872 by Lt. Coaker, it is a favourite morning walk spot for walkers and photographers. On a clear day, you might be lucky to spot the “Brocken Spectre,” whereby your shadow falls on clouds below and is surrounded by a halo of rainbows. The bracing air and peaceful landscapes have earned it a place among the must-visit Kodaikanal tourist attractions.
Bryant Park is a floral paradise, a beautifully landscaped botanical garden. It was established in 1908 and now houses hundreds of exotic and native plants. The park is quite vibrant during the flower show in May, which brings several tourists from all over the country. Glasshouse, having a variety of plant species and lawns neatly manicured, lend beauty to it. The riot of colours is a delight for families to enjoy picnics here. In contrast, nature enthusiasts will delight in the variety of blooms, making it one of the top places to visit in Kodaikanal.
The three granite Pillar Rocks, which stand as a mighty landmark at an astonishing height of 400 feet, are the most noted attractions in Kodaikanal. Wrapped in mist, it forms an eye-catching view of the vertical boulders. The stillness of cliffs with leaves rustling interrupts it to be one place of solitude for reflection and clicking pictures. A tiny garden beside it acts as a viewfinder from which the towering rocks are contemplated.
Known as the Devil’s Kitchen, these caves became famous after the Tamil film Guna was released. The caves are situated among dense forests and are extremely beautiful and eerie. Though it would be restricted to going within for safety reasons, the surrounding areas are worth exploring for their peculiar beauty. The gnarled roots of the shola trees and the mystical atmosphere make this one of the most intriguing Kodaikanal tourist places.
Bear Shola Falls is an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts. Situated amidst dense foliage, it is believed to be a waterhole for the bears and has such a name. The forest trail leading to the falls involves a short trek. During the monsoon, the falls attain their peak beauty. The soft, trickling sound of water, merged with chirping birds, creates a calm environment where you can sigh in relief. It’s one of the best places to see in Kodaikanal for nature lovers.
Silver Cascade Falls is a 180-foot cascade on the Kodaikanal-Madurai road that attracts the eye with its pure beauty. The water flows down from Kodai Lake and falls as a forceful gush, creating a misty spray. For those travelling to Kodaikanal, this stunning waterfall is one of the must-see places to roam in Kodaikanal.
Pine Forest, erected in the early 1900s by Mr. Bryant, is a dreamy escape into nature. Surrounded by tall pine trees, with sunlight filtering through the dense canopy, it creates a surreal setting. This enchanting spot is one of the most popular places to visit in Kodaikanal, where people often go to photograph, picnic, and take leisurely walks. It has also been a favourite shooting location for many Indian movies.
Green Valley View is one of the Kodaikanal tourist places with panoramic viewpoints known as Suicide Point. The place provides a view of the plains, deep valleys, and the Vaigai Dam. One can reach the viewpoint from a small market where they can shop for souvenirs and local products. It is best visited during the morning when the mist has cleared, revealing the vast expanse below.
About 23 km from the main town, Berijam Lake is a pristine freshwater lake surrounded by forests. It is one of those offbeat places to see in Kodaikanal that requires prior permission from the forest department, but it is worth the trouble. This place is a paradise for bird watchers and nature lovers who wish to see nature in its pristine form. Picnics beside the calm waters are favourite pastimes here.
The museum is the pride of Sacred Heart College, and its collections make it a nature lover’s paradise. More than 500 species of orchids, fossils, and artefacts adorn the museum’s space. Taxidermy helps us understand the region’s biodiversity and is one of the top Kodaikanal sightseeing places.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is one of the main Kodaikanal tourist attractions, both spiritual and scenic. The Kurinji flower blossoms once every 12 years and spreads its beauty over the hills like a blue blanket. Visitors from the temple premises can view the Palani Hills and the plains in their full grandeur.
The village of Poombarai is famous for its terraced farming. Poombarai village viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the colourful fields and the quaint town amidst the hills. Visiting here is a journey into the heart of Kodaikanal’s rural charm.
