Tata Capital > Blog > Places to Visit in Oman
Think you are in the middle of golden deserts, turquoise waters, and ancient forts all around you. At the southeastern end of the Arabian Peninsula is Oman — a country that surprises and delights at the same time.
Whether you are craving adventure in rugged mountains, a practical experience in clear waters or immersion in rich traditions, Oman’s the place for you.
Here’s a guide to some places to visit in Oman:
First one of Oman’s tourist places is Muscat. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is full of Islamic architecture. It has one of the largest Persian carpets in the world. Close by, the Royal Opera House encapsulates Oman’s dedication to arts and culture.
A walk through the Mutrah Souk is a sensory delight, with its multitude of spices, textiles and traditional crafts. The Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts on the harbor provide sweeping views, and a peek into the nation’s storied past.
Nizwa, once a hub of trade, education and art, is famed for its 17th-century fort. The fort’s giant cylindrical tower will give you an insider’s view of ancient defence systems, from strategically built windows to honey traps.
Next to the fort is the whirring Nizwa Souk, where silver jewelry and handicrafts are the property. The weekly goat market is a distinctive cultural experience and offers a glimpse into traditional Omani commerce.
Wahiba Sands offers rolling dunes and a glimpse of Bedouin life for the quintessential desert experience. Take camel rides, go dune bashing, or stop for a night of stargazing at a desert camp and to soak in the isolated beauty of the sands.
Salalah, in the Dhofar region, is a sharp contrast to Oman’s arid landscapes. One of Oman sightseeing places, the area becomes a lush paradise with gushing waterfalls and green hills in the Khareef season (June to September), when monsoon rains hit the region. It’s also known for its frankincense souks and unspoiled beaches.
An upland area in part of the Al Hajar mountain range, Jebel Akhdar, or “The Green Mountain,” is known for its terraced farms, fruit orchards and rose gardens.
The cooler atmosphere renders it perfect for hiking and visiting the standard villages of the land. This makes it a great Oman tourist attraction. The Omani rose water of the area is also known, as are its pomegranates and roses.
At the farthest eastern point of the Arabian Peninsula sits Ras al Jinz. It is a nature reserve where green turtles nest on the beach. You might see turtles during egg-laying season between May and October, or hatchlings heading to the sea.
Glimpses of moonlit ruins are both an educational and memorable experience, especially when seen on a guided tour.
Sohar is among the top places to visit in Oman. It has a rich maritime history and is believed to be the home of Sinbad the Sailor. The city’s fort, known for its white architecture, provides context to its storied past.
Newer additions include malls and parks, but Sohar retains its old-world charm, particularly along its scenic corniche.
Wadi Bani Khalid is one of Oman’s most scenic wadis. It is known for its crystalline turquoise pools, lush date palms and striking rock formations.
It’s a great place to swim, picnic, or just enjoy the natural scenery. The wadi is accessible at all times of the year, but you should visit during cooler months as it is the ideal time to enjoy Wadi Bani Khalid.
Jebel Shams is Oman’s tallest mountain. It provides magnificent views, including the stunning “Grand Canyon of Arabia.”
The region is a popular trekking ground, and there are trails for all levels of expertise. This makes Jebel Shams one of the best places to go in Oman. Its cool climate and great views make it a favorite among nature lovers.
From ancient forts to wadis and the majestic mountains, every corner of Oman has a story waiting to be explored.
If you have been dreaming about the best places to visit in Oman, but are concerned about the budget, don’t worry — You can count on Tata Capital’s loan for travelling.
