Tata Capital > Blog > The Ultimate Guide to Celebrating Holi in India
Marking the onset of spring and victory of good over evil, Holi is celebrated across India with zeal and great bonhomie. However, the celebrations differ from one part of India to another. If you love to travel, you should plan a short trip over the extended weekend this Holi to check out the celebrations.
This Holi, if you wish to experience revelry like never before, these are some of the places you need to add to your travel list:
Mathura
The birthplace of Lord Krishna attracts thousands of tourists and pilgrims during Holi. According to scriptures, the tradition of playing Holi originated from the Raas Leela of Radha and Krishna. The celebrations here begin a week before Holi with a colorful musical procession from the temples to River Yamuna.
The best place to catch all the excitement is the Dwarkadheesh Temple in Mathura and the Banke-Bihari Temple in Vrindavan.
Barsana
The Radha-Krishna story will take you to the town of Barsana in Uttar Pradesh, where the unique tradition of lath maar Holi is practiced. Re-enacting how Krishna would tease Radha and her friends, the two-day festival has men indulging in the playful mocking, while the women chase them away with large sticks. Hence, the name. The men protect themselves with shields while being chased around town.
The main celebrations take place at the Ladli Ji Temple dedicated to Radha.

Shantiniketan
Started by Rabindranath Tagore in the Visva-Bharati University at Shantiniketan, Holi celebrations here are marked by cultural programs and folk dances. The students and other members of the institution dress up in yellow and put up a host of performances after which everyone indulges in color play. Also known as Basanta Utsav, the Holi celebrations here have become an integral part of Bengali culture.
Goa
The festival known as Shigmotsav locally can last for a fortnight. The festivities begin with prayers to various Gods and Goddesses with parades, performances and cultural dramas that remain the highlight in the last five days.
While most of the action is focused around the cities of Panjim, Vasco, and Margao, the beaches of Goa could put the biggest music and dance festivals of the world to shame, with DJ parties that last for days on end.
There are multiple modes of transport available for you to get to your preferred destination this Holi. You can go via road or air depending on the time and finances you have. Worried about the finances? Choose a travel loan. The quicker you apply for it, the better will be your chances to make it in time for the festivities.
