Hatchback Cars vs Crossover Hatchback Cars

Hatchback cars are popular in cities and for good reasons. They are compact, can zip through traffic, deliver excellent mileage and are easy to maintain. With the increase in per capita income of buyers, the Indian automotive market has gradually moved from entry-level hatchbacks to mid-level hatchbacks and premium hatches. A similar trend is being observed in the second-hand cars or used cars segment too.

In the past 4-5 years, a new breed of crossover hatchback cars or CUVs (crossover utility vehicle) has found favor among young buyers, both in new and second hand cars segment. It is essentially a hatchback with a touch of ruggedness and the feel of an SUV. Without further ado, let’s check out how both of these car types compare.

Design Whether entry-level or premium, hatchbacks feature an elongated front bay for the engine, a cabin with two seating rows and a small boot that is usually accessed by lifting the tailgate. It is a two-box design. The basic elements remain the same as a crossover hatchback car. It mostly gets a body cladding all around, skid plates, rear spoiler, different color options and upholstery shades. It is aimed to look bold.
Ground clearance It gets the regular ground clearance that could be anywhere between 165mm to 180mm* (approximately). In its bid to look like an SUV, the crossover hatches have a high center of gravity thanks to the raised ground clearance that matches with that of the SUVs. It could be anywhere between 180mm to 220mm.
Engine The hatchbacks can have an engine capacity of any volume depending on its nature. For instance, a car like Maruti Alto 800 has a 0.8-litre engine while a hot hatch like Volkswagen Polo GT TSI has a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which generates massive power of 103 bhp. The crossover utility vehicles are usually offered with the same set of engines as their hatchback counterparts. At times, the motor may be tuned to offer better performance with increased power and torque figures. 
Mileage Whether new or second hand cars, hatchbacks deliver better fuel efficiency than any other car-type in any variant, be it petrol, diesel, or CNG. Usually, the CUVs offer similar fuel economy as the hatches they are based on. However, the retuning of the engine for more performance may slightly affect the mileage figures.
Examples Maruti WagonR, Hyundai Grand i10, Tata Tiago, Maruti Swift and Honda Jazz. Toyota Etios Cross, Maruti Celerio X, Volkswagen Cross Polo, Hyundai i20 Active and Fiat Avventura.

*Some rare hatches may have higher clearances. The mentioned GC is most commonly found.
