Kerala, known as “God’s Own Country,” is home to beautiful beaches, tea estates, and various tourist attractions. Chief among these is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, an event held annually on Punnamada Lake in Alleppey. This historically and culturally significant event attracts thousands of spectators each year.
If you are planning vacation activities in Kerala, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an exciting event to attend. In this article, we will delve into its rich culture and history and explore its role among Kerala’s tourist attractions.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an annual event held in the Alappuzha district (better known as Alleppey) of Kerala. Known as the “Kuttanad’s Olympics on water,” contestants compete in a boat race, with each team consisting of 111 members. The track is 1370 metres long and divided into various sections to conduct the race.
The event begins with a procession of snake boats, also called “chundan vallams.” The race of these snake boats is the most popular event in the competition. Supporters from India and across the globe come to watch and support their preferred village boating club from the sidelines.
The history of these iconic boats is often attributed to the kings of the Alappuzha and Kottayam districts from 400 years ago. They designed sleek, fast boats that could carry up to 100 men with good speed and manoeuvrability.
However, the history of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, in particular, can be traced back to 1952. This was the year the first Prime Minister of India visited Kerala. He was intrigued by the traditional boat races he viewed and donated a silver trophy to the winner.
This eventually led to the inception of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which paid homage not only to the late Prime Minister but also to the rich culture and history of Kerala.
This race is significant for several reasons:
Alongside its temples, wildlife, and resorts, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race has become a significant aspect of Kerala’s tourism. It attracts visitors who seek to experience the state’s unique heritage. The event allows tourists to immerse themselves in the culture and share in the customs of the locals.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race goes beyond just a sporting event. It marks the beginning of the Onam season in Kerala. In Alappuzha and nearby districts, travelling by paddle boats is a tradition. The race attracts thousands every year and is a reminder of Alappuzha’s tradition and culture. Involving boating, music, traditional cuisines, and dancing, it helps preserve Alappuzha’s boating tradition.
Additionally, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race plays a role in preserving traditional boat-making and rowing skills. The skills required by craftsmen to create these vessels are passed down from generation to generation.
Beyond its cultural significance and effects on tourism, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race has a substantial impact on the local economy. Since it attracts thousands of spectators, there is a massive influx of income for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, boat makers, vendors, and other service providers.
Additionally, participants are provided with payment and other benefits for their training and participation.
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is typically held on the second Saturday of August. This year would have been the 70th edition of the race. However, the event has been postponed due to the tragic Wayanad landslides. The race will now be conducted on September 7th this year.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race tickets can be purchased online or at government offices in Kerala. A counter has been opened at the KSRTC depot in Alappuzha. People can buy tickets from the counter or purchase them online on the Nehru Boat Race Trophy website.
Those who have purchased their tickets online or through WhatsApp can pick them up from these counters on the morning of the race. It’s important to remember that due to the Wayanad landslides, the race and purchase of online tickets have been delayed.
Ticket prices vary depending on the chosen category. These include:
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an exciting blend of sports, culture, tradition, and communal harmony. It draws together locals and tourists alike to celebrate this cultural event, offering an unforgettable experience to those who view it. The event showcases the spirit of competition and the vibrant heritage of Kerala, making it a must-see for anyone visiting the region.
