The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is a landmark step in popularizing women’s cricket. After a successful inaugural season in 2023, the tournament has returned this year with a new season. And one team that has its eyes the Delhi Capitals women’s team, last year’s runners-up.
After topping the table but losing to Mumbai Indians in the final, Delhi Capitals have made some strategic changes to their squad for WPL 2024. They released a few existing players from the team but retained the best of their lot. They even brought in two uncapped players and a foreign player.
Read on to know more about what the Delhi Capitals women’s team has in store for fans in 2024.
WPL’s Delhi Capitals is owned by GMR Group and JSW Group, which also owns the men’s team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Before heading into the WPL 2024 auction, the team retained 10 Indian players and 5 foreign players, including the team captain – Alice Capsey.
The team also released three players – Tara Norris, Jasia Akhtar, and Sneha Deepti. Of the three, Tara’s release was a surprise because she had the first-ever five-for to her name in the tournament.
After the initial rejig, the Delhi Capital owners went to the auction with Rs 2.25 crores to spend on new players. Out of their budget, they spent 2 crores on Anna Sutherland, a talented all-rounder from Australia.
With only 25 lakhs left in their purse, the franchise bought Aparna Mondal and Ashwani Kumari for 10 lakhs each. Aparna is a wicket-keeper while Ashwani is a batting all-rounder.
So, the Delhi Capital has entered this year’s competition with 18 players, with roughly the same members as last year. Here’s the complete breakdown of the Delhi Capitals women’s squad for 2024:
| Retained Player | Players Purchased in Auction | Released Players |
| Alice Capsey*(C) Arundhati Red Jemimah Rodrigues Jess Jonassen* Laura Harris* Marizanne Kapp* Meg Lanning* Minnu Mani Poonam Yadav Radha Yadav Shafali Verma Shikha Pandey Sneha Deepthi Taniyaa Bhatia Titas Sadhu | Annabel Sutherland* Aparna Mondal Ashwani Kumari | Tara Norris* Jasia Akhtar Sneha Deepti |
Note: (C) – Captain, * – Foreign Players
As mentioned above, Delhi Capitals’ women had a great run in the WPL’s inaugural season last year. They dominated the tournament and topped the table. However, they lost the finals to Mumbai Indians. They fell short of 72 runs, thanks to Hayley Matthews, who took three wickets for Mumbai and conceded only five runs.
Such a good performance last year explains why the Delhi Capitals women’s squad remains almost the same, with only three players dropped and three new signings.
Delhi Capitals women’s squad looks like a solid team on paper. It has a good mix of batters, bowlers, and all-rounders to bring the team home.
The team took on the WPL 2023 winners, Mumbai Indians, in the first match to kickstart WPL’s new season. However, Delhi lost what was a very close counter as they fell short by just 2 runs. Although the team had 5 wickets in hand, they ran out of overs.
Delhi Capitals’ women quickly rebounded as they defeated UP Warriorz by 9 wickets in the next match. After a good bowling performance in the first inning, the team chased down the target with more than 5 overs remaining.
Currently, Delhi is third on the table behind Mumbai Indians, which has 4 points. However, Delhi has a positive net run rate of +1.222, while Mumbai has a slightly poor net run rate of -0.182.
Now, all eyes are set on Delhi’s next match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, scheduled for 29 February 2024. Bangalore has played two games so far and won both of them. With 4 points and a net run rate of +1.665, it sits at the top of the table.
Despite the slow start to the season, Delhi Capitals women’s team has a perfect opportunity to bounce back. They have momentum from their last win, and defeating a strong time like Bangalore will put them on top of the table and boost their confidence for the rest of the season.
